OPERATING AWARDS SPONSORED BY PEARS

SOUTHERN AFRICAN H.F. CENTURY AWARD

This award is available to all amateur radio operators for contacts made since 1st January 2004. The aim is to contact Maidenhead grid locators on the African mainland South of the Equator on the nine high frequency amateur bands. Score one point per grid locator on each of these bands. Only one contact per grid locator is eligible. Total points is the sum of points on each band.

There are three categories for the award:
Bronze Award: Score at least 100 points in 5 different countries.
Silver Award : Score at least 200 points in 10 different countries
Gold Award : Score at least 300 points in 15 different countries.

All contacts must be made from within a radius of 25 kilometres. Contacts must be confirmed either by QSL cards or by other means acceptable to the awards committee, such as electronic means. Decisions made by the awards committee shall be final.


SOUTHERN AFRICAN VHF CENTURY AWARD

This award is available to all amateur radio operators for contacts made since 1st January 2004. The aim is to contact Maidenhead grid locators on the African mainland South of the Equator on the 6 metre and 2 metre amateur bands and certificates will be awarded for each of these bands. The award may be endorsed for analog contacts or digital contacts. Both endorsements may be obtained, but each endorsement must be obtained with strictly analog contacts and strictly digital contacts. There is no mixed-mode category. For the purpose of this award CW will be classified as an analog mode. Only one contact per grid locator is eligible.

Scoring: A contact in your own grid locator scores 1 point. A contact in each grid locator encircling your grid locator will count 2 points. A contact in each grid locator encircling these grid locators counts 3 points, and so on up to a maximum of 5 points. The sum of these points is multiplied by the number of grid locators contacted to obtain a total points score.
International stations : all contacts are worth 5 points.

There are three categories for the award:
Bronze Award: Score at least 100 points in 8 grid locators
Silver Award : Score at least 250 points in 12 grid locators.
Gold Award : Score at least 500 points and 16 grid locators.

All contacts must be made from within a radius of 25 kilometres and must be made on simplex. No contacts via repeaters, satellite or Moonbounce (EME) will be eligible. Grid locators activated for the sole benefit of a specific station will result in the disqualification of this station. Contacts must be confirmed either by QSL cards or by other means acceptable to the awards committee, such as electronic means. Decisions made by the awards committee shall be final.

PEARS CW Merit Award Certificate
2-way contacts with 50 different stations.  Endorsements for additional 100, 250 and 500 contacts.  New certificate for 1000 contacts.
Contacts anywhere, and on any band.  Logs must be signed by the chairman of the  applicant's club, or two other amateurs.
The recipient need not be a member of PEARS.

PEARS QRP Certificate
20 different maidenhead locator contacts.  Power <=5W.  Endorsements for each additional 20 contacts up to a max of 100.  Contacts within same home square do not count.   Only one contact per station.  Logs must indicate the home square, and the other contacts' locations.  Logs must be signed by the chairman of the  applicant's club, or two other amateurs.
The recipient need not be a member of PEARS.

INTERNAL ANNUAL CLUB AWARDS

ZS2OB DX Trophy: (Cup + Certificate) Applications and nominations to be considered by the committee, and awarded to the person whom the committee considers most deserving.

DF Hunt Trophy: (Cup + Certificate) To be decided by the committee and awarded to the person who performed most successfully during DF hunts that took place during the year. The receipient must have been a PEARS member during that year.

ZS2AB Constructor's Trophy: (Cup + Certificate) Applications and nominations to be considered by the committee.  In deciding, the committee shall take recognition of the number of construction projects undertaken, their complexity and the quality and appearance of the finished product/s. The recipient must be able to display the items at the AGM where the award is made, or as soon as possible  thereafter. The receipient must have been a PEARS member during that year.

Ham Spirit Trophy: (Cup + Certificate - Cup donated my Marge, ZS2OB) The award to be decided by the committee in confidence.  The award to be made in recognition of those qualities which make a good all-round Ham, viz willingness to help, activity on the air, friendliness, courtesy to his/her fellows and participation in the activities of the Society.

Merit: (Certificate) Made to persons who have made an exceptional contribution to the society.  At the discretion of the committee, and presented at the AGM. The receipient must have been a PEARS member during that year.

Merit Cup: (Trophy + Certificate) A floating trophy initiated in 2001, to replace the certificates.

Appreciation Award: (Certificate) Made in appreciation of services rendered to the benefit of the Society or its members, at the discretion of the committee.  Can be presented at any appropriate occasion. The recipient need not be a member of PEARS.

Achievement: (Certificate) Made in recognition of a special or outstanding achievement in the context of amateur radio, at the discretion of the committee.  Can be presented at any appropriate occasion.  The receipient must have been a PEARS member during that year.

VHF Trophy (one for both 2m and 6m) (Cup + Certificate) 50 points, endorsements for each extra 50 pts, max of 200.Contacts (from same square):

1 pt same square
5 pts adjacent square
20 pts other squares
Logs must indicate the home square, and the other contacts' locations.
The receipient must have been a PEARS member during that year.
